Will Autonomous Vehicles Ever Be Safe

Autonomous Vehicle

Autonomous vehicles are making headlines on an almost daily basis, with an ever increasing amount of driverless miles driven.  The rigorous safety standards used for the development of software for traditional vehicles become even more important when applied in driverless vehicles.

The need for functional safety is clear when applied to components such as braking systems, but how does this manifest itself in the development of user interfaces in the vehicle?  If a car is driving without human interaction, is there the same need for a user interface?  What is the requirement for functional safety for infotainment when running in mixed criticality environments?

The Digica team has worked with DiSTI to examine the current state of the art technology and processes, to predict what impact this will have on the development of autonomous vehicles.
